UNESCO Global Geoparks Network - UNESCO Global Geoparks Network

UNESCO Globale Geoparke is enkele, verenigde geografiese gebiede waar terreine en landskappe van internasionale geologiese belang bestuur word met 'n holistiese konsep van beskerming, opvoeding en volhoubare ontwikkeling.

Agtergrond

Geoparke gaan beslis nie net oor geologie nie, maar wil die verband tussen die geologiese erfenis (geo-erfenis) van ons planeet en verwante natuurerfenis (biosfeer) en kulturele erfenis (tasbare elemente as monumente en ontasbaar ook, soos tradisies). Op hierdie manier is hulle nou verbonde en koördineer met ander nasionale en internasionale projekte (soos Nasionale parke), en hulle hou veral verband met mede-UNESCO-programme:

UNESCO Wêrelderfenisgebiede: bevorder die bewaring van natuurlike en kulturele terreine van uitstaande universele waarde van die mensdom
UNESCO-mens- en biosfeerprogram: fokus op die geharmoniseerde bestuur van biologiese en kulturele diversiteit
UNESCO Ontasbare kulturele erfenis: elemente van ons gemeenskaplike kultuur wat nie aangeraak kan word nie (bv. mondelinge tradisies, rituele, kennis rakende die natuur)

Vanaf 2020 is daar 147 UNESCO-wêreldwye geo-parke in 41 lande; hulle is lede van die Globale Geoparke Netwerk. Verskeie geoparke wêreldwyd doen aansoek om die etiket, dit is die sogenaamde aspirant-geoparke. In sommige lande soos Sjina, Japan of Duitsland, daar is ook 'n uitgebreide netwerk van nasionale geoparke wat soortgelyke riglyne volg, maar sonder UNESCO-etikettering (tot dusver). Die UNESCO Global Geopark-titel word vir 4 jaar gegee en dan weer geëvalueer om die kwaliteit van die beskermings-, onderwys- en ontwikkelingsdoelstellings in die gebied te verseker.

Geoheritage en die verband daarvan met biodiversiteit en kulturele erfenis kom in baie vorme voor. Die sogenaamde geosiete is die presiese “fisiese plek” waar belangrike elemente van geologie gevind kan word: landvorme, grotte, mynesteengroewe wat sekere geologiese prosesse goed illustreer. Hulle het of hulle is in koördinasie met museums, interpretasiesentrums waar mense kan leer oor die geologie van die geopark. Uiteindelik bied hulle talle aktiwiteite en produkte aan, soos toere, of selfs kos geïnspireer deur geologie!

Hulle missie is om:

mense inlig oor die volhoubare gebruik en die behoefte aan natuurlike hulpbronne
verhoog die bewustheid op geologiese gevare, soos vulkane, aardbewings, grondverskuiwings
wys besoekers hoe klimaatverandering kan ons omgewing beïnvloed, aangesien geoheritage gereeld rekords hou van klimaatsveranderinge in die verlede
deur onderwys (beide vir kinders en volwassenes!), versprei die bewustheid van ons geologiese erfenis en die skakeling daarvan met natuurlike, kulturele en ontasbare erfenisse
aktiewe wetenskaplike bevordering navorsing in die Aardwetenskappe in hul gebied
bewaar die geo-erfenis met die nodige beskermingsmaatreëls, monitering, ontmoediging van die verkoop van geologiese produkte (minerale, fossiele, ens.)
vier die skakels tussen ons gemeenskappe en die Aarde, soos boumateriaal, landvorms in die mitologie
betrek en bevorder plaaslike en inheemse kennis
volhoubare ontwikkeling en vorms van groen toerisme (bv. wandelpaaie, plaaslike fokus in produkte, werknemers)
