Zürich (Duits: Zürich, Switserse Duits: Züri) is die grootste stad in Switserland, met 'n bevolking van ongeveer 435,000 (2018) in die stad, en 1,3 miljoen (2009) in die metrogebied. Geskiedenis
Die stad se Latynse naam, Turicum, is gebruik vir 'n Romeinse doeanestasie aan die Limmat, wat vandag 'n paar oorblyfsels het. Die Alemanni, 'n Germaanse stam, het hom in die 5de eeu gevestig.
Terwyl die kerk vroeër Middeleeuse Zürich regeer het, was die Gilde (Zünfte) het in 1336 die bewind oorgeneem en Zürich as 'n outonome republiek gevestig. Die gildes het tot vandag oorleef, alhoewel hul rol vandag meestal seremonieel is. Zurich het in 1351 die vyfde kanton van die Switserse Konfederasie geword en was soms die hoofstad daarvan. 1 Zürich-lughawe (ZRH IATA) is die grootste en besigste lughawe in Switserland en hanteer ongeveer 30 miljoen passasiers per jaar. A1 gaan verby Zürich net noord van die stad, met twee voeders na die middestad. A3 en A4 eindig net suid van die stad. Die streekspaaie A51, A52 en A53 almal lei ook na Zürich. Alhoewel daar baie maniere is om vanuit alle rigtings die stad binne te ry, beteken dit ook dat daar baie opeenhopings is, veral gedurende die oggend- en saansure. Parkering is ook moeilik om teen bekostigbare tariewe oor die weg te kom, dus dit kan tog vinniger en geriefliker wees om met die openbare vervoer te reis.
Met die bus

U kan ook kaartjies koop op ZVV-kaartjies-app. Die gratis Wemlin-app op iPhone en op Android gee u vanlyn toegang tot roosterinligting en netwerkkaarte vir die kanton Zürich sonder internetverbinding en is dus ideaal vir onderweg gebruik as u nie data-swerwing wil gebruik nie.
Die stelsel is verdeel in talle tariefsones, met die middestad en die binneste voorstede in sone 110 en die buitenste voorstede in ander sones (Winterthur is byvoorbeeld in sone 120), en hoe meer sones u deurgaan, hoe meer u Ek sal vir u reis moet betaal. Daar is enkelkaartjies, dagkaarte, maandkaarte en jaarkaartjies. Daar word gesamentlik na die maand- en jaarkaart verwys ZVV NetzPass.
Kaartjies moet by 'n kaartjieverkoopmasjien gekoop word voordat u inklim of by een van die kioskies wat kaartjies verkoop. Die kaartjieverkoopmasjiene is in Duits, Engels, Frans en Italiaans en bied byna alle gewone kaartjies beskikbaar (hoewel nie persoonlike kaartjies nie). U kies die sones waardeur u wil gaan met die aankoop van die kaartjie, met 'n sone-kaart op elke masjien asook duidelike instruksies wat u te hulp kom, dus kies gerus! As u langer bly, oorweeg dan 'n maandelikse ZVV NetzPass, want alhoewel daar geen gewone kaartjies geldig is vir iets tussen 1 dag en 'n maand nie, neem dit slegs 10 "zone 110" dagkaarte vir 'n "zone 110" maandelikse kaart om goedkoper te wees. Die Switserse reispas (om nie met die SwissPass te verwar nie) is geldig op alle openbare vervoer in Zürich, en as u 'n toeris is wat die grootste deel van Switserland besoek, is dit miskien die beste manier om geld en tyd te spaar om streke, roetes en tariefopsies. U moet 'n geldige kaartjie hê voordat u aan boord gaan. As u nie 'n kaartjie het nie, is u aanspreeklik vir 'n ter plaatse boete van Fr. 100.
Per boot
Daar is twee soorte openbare vervoer per boot in Zürich: rivierbusse en meerbote. Die rivierbote werk slegs in die somermaande en die meerbote werk gedurende die winter volgens 'n baie verminderde skedule.
Die rivierbusse ry tussen die Landesmuseum (naby die Hauptbahnhof) langs die rivier Limmat en uit in die Zürichsee (Zürichsee) na Tiefenbrunnen. Daar is verskeie stopplekke langs die Limmat.
Die Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) bedryf meerbote (insluitend twee historiese gerestoureerde stoomskepe) wat vertrek vanaf Burkliplatz (aan die einde van Bahnhofstrasse). Die webwerf van die ZSG bied inligting oor bestemmings en skepe. Die ZSG bied 'n verskeidenheid toeristegerigte reise (insluitend Jazz Brunch), en 'n gewilde reis is na Rapperswil aan die suidekant van die Zürichsee. Op voet
Die hoofstasie, die ou stad en die meerpromenade en al die nabygeleë toeriste-aantreklikhede is maklik om te loop. U mag dalk sien dat u nie vervoer nodig het vir die meeste van u toeristebehoeftes sodra u in die stad is nie.
Per fiets
Oor die algemeen is Zurich maklik om per fiets rond te kom. Daar is fietsbane in die meeste dele van die stad, en as u nie van die heuwels hou nie, kan 'n fiets 'n vinnige en goedkoop alternatief vir openbare vervoer wees. Die stad het 'n aanlyn kaartdiens, wat roetes vir fietsry kan bereken en ook plekke vir fietsparkering en pompe toon. Baie van die groot kruisings het nie fietsrybane nie as gevolg van ruimtebeperkings, maar dit is oor die algemeen moontlik om dit te vermy. Züri rollt bied gratis fietshuur in die stad aan. Om 'n gratis fiets te kry, moet u by u ID registreer. of paspoort en betaal 'n terugbetaalbare deposito van Fr. 20. Daar is sewe stasies. Twee van hulle is op die hoofstasie (3 Noord-fietshek en 4 suidfietshek) en word die hele jaar deur bedryf. Die res word slegs van April tot Oktober bedryf. Twee van hulle is naby die ou stad by 5 Globus-stad en by 6 Bellevue. Die openingstye wissel per stasie, maar die meeste van hulle word daagliks van 09: 00-21: 30 uur bedryf.
O-Bike is 'n Chinese motorfiets-deeldiens wat nuut is in die stad. Dit is 'n gratis drywende stelsel met sy fietse wat lukraak oor die stad geparkeer is. Om te ontsluit, benodig u hul app en 'n deposito van Fr. 130. Daarna kan u fietse huur vir Fr. 1,50 per halfuur.

- 2 Lindenhof. Die heuwel in die hartjie van die ou stad. 'N Pragtige uitsig oor die stad en eenmalige ligging van 'n Romeins fort.
- 3 Promenade aan die meer (Utoquai, Seefeldquai). Veral gedurende die somer is die meer 'n pragtige plek om die aand of die naweek deur te bring. Vanaf Bellevue loop die promenade ongeveer drie kilometer langs die meer in die rigting van Tiefenbrunnen. Ongeveer halfpad van Bellevue af is daar 'n weide waar jy duisende mense op 'n sonnige dag sal vind.
- 4 Grossmünster, Zwingliplatz. November-Februarie 10ː00-17ː00, Maart-Oktober 10ː00-18ː00. Ou Romaanse kerk, simbool van die gereformeerde Zürich, waar hervormer Huldrych Zwingli in 1519 tot die volkspriester aangestel is. - 7 Langstrasse. Rooiligdistrik van Zürich, met meer dwelmhandelaars en polisie as gewoonlik, maar interessant omdat selfs hierdie berugste plek in Switserland so skoon en veilig is. Die gebied is die mees openbaar multikulturele plek in die stad. Ateliers en stylvolle kroeë sit langs mekaar die ontkleeklubs.

Dit is die plek om na toe te gaan as u meer wil leer oor die geskiedenis van Switserland. Daar is permanente uitstallings oor geskiedenis, argeologie en kuns. - 15 Johann Jacobs Museum, Seefeldquai 17, ☏ 41 44 388 61 90. Di 16ː00-20ː00, Sa So 11ː00-17ː00. 'N Museum wat die komplekse geskiedenis van wêreldwye handelsroetes en goedere en die kultuur rondom beskryf. Vr. 7.
- 16 Pavillon Le Corbusier, Höschgasse 8 (naby China Garden), ☏ 41 44 383 64 70. W, V-So 12: 00-18: 00, Do 12: 00-20: 00. Dit is die laaste gebou wat deur die Switserse argitek le Corbusier ontwerp is. Die Pavillon is na sy dood gebou as 'n museum wat aan sy werk gewy is. Toegang tot die gebou was lank moeilik en duur, ook as gevolg van 'n wettige stryd tussen die voormalige beskermheer en inisieerder van die gebou en die stad Zürich. Nou word dit egter deur die stad bestuur en oop vir die publiek. Die hoogtepunt van die museum is natuurlik die gebou self, maar daar is ook jaarliks veranderende uitstallings oor argitektuur. - 17 Rietberg Museum, Gablerstrasse 15 (Tram 7 vir Wollishofen, afrit by stop 'Museum Rietberg'; vyf minute se stap na museum S-Bahn na Enge-stasie; tien minute se stap na museum Bus 72 vir Morgental, gaan af by die stop 'Hügelstrasse'; ses minute se stap na museum), ☏ 41 44 415 31 31. Dit is een van die grootste kunsmuseums in Switserland, wat deur die stad Zürich bestuur word. Die fokus val op die tradisionele en kontemporêre kunste en kulture van Asië, Afrika, die Amerikas en Oseanië. - Neem die 1 Polybahn, Sentraal 1. Bedryf M-F 06: 45–19: 15, Sa 07: 30–14: 00, gesluit op Su en openbare vakansiedae. 'N Kabelbaan in die 19de eeu, teen die steil heuwel op vir 'n pragtige uitsig. Begin by die tremstasie Sentraal en styg tot by die ETH. Lekker terras daar bo. Gedurende die week is die studentekafeteria onder die terras ook oop vir die publiek. Vr. 1.20, gratis met ZürichCARD of 'n geldige ZVV-kaartjie vir Zone 110.
- 2 Oberer / Unterer Letten. As u in die somer na Zürich gaan, neem u swembroek saam. Die skoon rivier by die openbare rivierbaddens "Oberer Letten" (veral jongmense) en "Unterer Letten" (ook gesinne) word deur die plaaslike bevolking gebruik om na warm dae af te koel. Spring stroomop en die rivier dra jou af. Reg in die middel van die stad is daar ook 'n houtdryfbad vir vroue Frauenbad Stadthausquai aan die begin van die Limmat. - Gaan ski per trein - Koop 'n snow'n'rail-kaartjie (trein & skipass) gedurende die wintermaande by die Hauptbahnhof, oefen soggens, saans terug. Flumserberg is die naaste groot ski-oord, gewild onder inwoners van Zürich, met 'n goeie reeks lopies vir beginners en intermediêre. Trek terug na die regterkant van die oord as die res besig is.

- Gaan op 5 Uetliberg. 'N Heuwel wat uitkyk oor Zürich. U kan opklim of 'n trein neem vanaf die "SZU" -deel van die hoofstasie. Geniet die 360 grade uitsig vanaf 'n hoë uitkyktoring (nie vir vertigo-lyers nie!) Dit is ook die begin van die Planetenweg (planetêre wandeling), 'n wandeling van 12 km (8 myl) langs die kruin met modelle van die planete langs die pad. Dit word afgeskaal in verhouding tot die sonnestelsel. Om na Zurich vanaf die ander heuwels te kyk, gaan na die Irchel (Tramstasie Milchbuck) of Käferberg (Bucheggplatz, stap die heuwel op en hou regs van die bos). - Kyk sokker dws sokker: die stad het twee spanne wat in die Super League speel, die hoogste vlak van Switserse sokker. Albei FC Zürich en Sprinkane of GC Zürich speel by Letzigrund, kapasiteit 26.000, by 500 Badenerstrasse, 1 km wes van die hoofstasie.

- Die Grossmünster het soms orrelkonserte in die aande. Kyk na die voordeur vir kennisgewings.
Gebeurtenisse
- Straatparade. Die grootste opelug-techno-rave in Europa. Dit gebeur elke dag een dag op die tweede Saterdag van Augustus, waartydens vragmotors wat funksioneer as mobiele klankstelsels ("Love mobiles") langs die meer se kant begin ry, vanaf die ooste by Utoquai en eindig in die weste by Hafen Enge. Elke jaar lok hierdie geleentheid byna 'n miljoen besoekers wat in die strate dans op die musiek wat u van oral in die stad kan hoor. Na die straatparade hou die partytjie nie op nie, daar is ope-partytjies langs die roete tot middernag en klubpartytjies op verskillende plekke in die stad tot laat die volgende dag om die partytjie aan die gang te hou. Moenie verbaas wees as die stad se netheid die volgende dag nie op sy normale standaard is nie. - Switserse nasionale dag. 1 Augustus - Daar word saans in baie stede gevier. Vuurwerke word snags gelanseer. Hou hulle dop oor die meer, of as u self ervaar dat u self vuurwerke loods, kan u dit in die dae voor die nasionale vakansiedag koop en pret hê. Die uitstalling oor die Rheinfall, 'n uur met die S-Bahn weg, is ook uiters gewild. Vry.
- Sechseläuten. Ongeveer middel April vier die gildes van Zürich hul tradisionele lentefees met die verbranding van die sneeuman (Böögg). 'N Optog van etlike honderde mense met historiese gildekostuums en perde vind in die middel van die stad plaas. Vry.
- 6 Caliente-fees (Rondom Helvetiaplatz). Die grootste Latynse fees in Europa. Word elke jaar vroeg in Julie gehou. Probeer alle soorte Latyns-Amerikaanse kos en luister na samba, merengue & co. Groot skares. Vry.
- Züri Fäscht. 'N Naweekfees wat Zurich vier, wat elke 3 jaar plaasvind (laaste Julie 2019, volgende 2022). Dit word deur ongeveer 2 miljoen mense besoek. Vry.
- 7 Zürcher-teater Spektakel, Landiwiese (Bus nr. 161, 165 en Teater-Spektakel-bus: stop Landiwiese), ☏ 41 900 320 320. Laaste twee weke van Augustus vanaf 17:00. 'N Fees vir die uitvoerende kunste. - 8 Opernhaus, Falkenstrasse 1 (Met die tram stop Opernhaus, of neem die S-trein na Stadelhofen), ☏ 41 44 268 64 00. Die Zurich Opera wys gereeld veranderende produksies van wêreldbekende opera's met top kunstenaars. Soos met die Schauspielhaus, kry studente 'n groot last-minute afslag. Die beste sitplekke kos Fr. 45 vir studente. duur.
- 9 Rote Fabrik (Rooi Fabriek), Seestrasse 395, Postfach 1073, 8038 Zürich (Bus nr. 161, 165: stop Rote Fabrik), ☏ 41 44 485 58 58. 'N Ou syfabriek wat in die 1980's tot 'n sentrum van jeugkultuur en kuns omskep is. Die Rooi Fabriek het een van die opwindendste dele van die kulturele lewe geword. Koop
Winkeldistrikte
Om in Zurich te gaan koop, is daar drie verskillende gebiede in die sentrum:
- 1 Bahnhofstrasse. Loop vanaf die Zürich-treinstasie "Hauptbahnhof" tot by die meer. Bahnhofsstrasse is bekend as een van die mees eksklusiewe en duurste winkelstrate ter wêreld. Hier kan u enigiets van diamantringe tot sjokolade tot pelsjasse kry. Globus en Jelmoli is twee sterk mededingende afdelingswinkels, wat albei artikels van baie hoë handelsmerke bevat.
- 2 Niederdorf. Die ou deel van Zürich wat vanaf "Bellevue" by die meer uitbrei tot by "Central" wat net oor die rivier is vanaf die treinstasie. Die Niederdorf is meer vir jongmense. Aside from a lot of fast food places you will find a lot of trendy clothes stores here.
- 3 Löwenstrasse. Runs west of Bahnhofstrasse from the main train station, has shops selling everyday items and a large branch of Migros, a department store chain.
Swiss clocks and watches
You may be disappointed to know that most of the cheap watches and clocks in Switzerland are imported from China and Japan for their cheap quartz movements (including most of the wall clocks and alarm clocks sold at department stores, for example). Don't purchase a "Migros Budget" clock for Fr. 8 thinking it is a Swiss clock! Nevertheless, real Swiss-made clocks are still well known for their quality and reliability, and intricate mechanics. The following are true Swiss-made watches:
- Swatch, possibly your best bet for a "cheap" Swiss watch (Fr. 40-100) and perhaps better suited for the younger generation. Available in their stores on Bahnhofstrasse and various other locations, or in department stores.
- M-Watch, based on both Mondaine and Migros and available in Migros Electronics stores such as the one on the 2nd floor of the Lowenplatz location. Also relatively inexpensive (Fr. 40-100). Do not confuse this with "M-Budget" which is an imported cheap watch.
- Mondaine is known for their use of the famous SBB railway clock face. You can buy a replica of the SBB clock as a watch or a wall clock in most major railway stations, among other locations. However, most of them do not replicate the hallmark smooth movement of the second hand for 58.5 seconds followed by the 1.5-second pause that is characteristic of real SBB railway clocks, but they do replicate the clock face. They are quartz, and the price may seem a little inflated to you (Fr. 130-180). The vast majority of SBB railway clocks are produced by Mobatime (Moser-Baer AG), not Mondaine, even though Mondaine's name appears on some of the larger clocks such as the Treffpunkt in Zurich HB. Mondaine's wall and desk clocks, however, are only of "Swiss design" and are manufactured in China and Taiwan.
- Mid-range brands (Fr. 100-500) can be found at clock and watch stores throughout the city. Just walk in and have a look if you're interested.
- Upper-end watches and clocks, such as Rolex, are also sold, but you should probably do more research into them than you can find here. If you just want to stare at some of the most expensive watches for sale, take a look at the Bucherer store window at Bahnhofstrasse and see what a Fr. 25,000 watch looks like.
Swiss chocolate
Brands
- Frey is not as well known abroad as other Swiss brands, but with a market share of roughly 35%, it is the most popular brand in Switzerland. It mostly produces for the Migros supermarket chain and is known as good quality chocolate at a cheap price. A big share of the production is also exported, mostly however under store brand labels for chains such as Marks & Spencer, Loblaw, Tesco, Coles. The factory is in Aarau (about 1 hour by train and bus), where there is also a visitor centre.
- Lindt is available at the Coop and other supermarkets besides Migros for Fr. 2-2.50, but Lindt chocolates are also sold at the Lindt & Sprungli Chocolate Factory Shop, which is accessible by taking the S-Bahn S8 to Kilchberg (12 min) and then bus 165 to the stop "Lindt & Sprüngli" (2-3 min). Hours are limited (M-F 09:00–17:00). The factory store prices are somewhat lower than supermarket prices (on the order of 10-20%), but there are some sale items, including factory rejects (for underweight chocolates, improper packaging, or filling showing through) that are sold for roughly half-price. The Lindt factory used to offer tours and free samples, but this is no longer the case.
- Chocolats Halba belongs to Coop and produces all own-brand chocolates for the retailer (e.g. Naturaplan, Qualité & Prix, Prix Garantie, Karma). Chocolats Halba also produces for customers abroad - including in Germany, France, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and China. Chocolats Halba specialises in sustainable chocolate. Overproductions are sold in the outlet shop, the Schoggihüsli, located in Hinwil (Zürichstrasse 55, 8340 Hinwil). The offer is seasonally adapted and low-priced. It includes, for example, broken chocolate in a 1 kilo bag for 5-8 francs. In addition, there are also export articles that cannot be bought anywhere else in Switzerland.
- Läderach produces their signature "fresh chocolate" as well as confectioneries. They sell their products in a chain of stores in Switzerland. Multiple stores are located at the Zurich main station, and another one is located right at the entrance of Bahnhofstrasse.
The larger Coop supermarkets carry many brands, including Lindt, Camille Bloch, Goldkenn, and others, including all sorts of alcohol-filled chocolates.
Confectioneries
- Teuscher. — An upscale confiserie that specializes in truffles. There are three stores in Zürich.
- 4 Teuscher, Bahnhofstrasse 46, ☏ 41 44 211 13 90.
- 5 Teuscher, Storchengasse 9, ☏ 41 44 211 5153.
- 6 Teuscher (Globus), Schweizergasse 11, ☏ 41 44 211 5153.
- Sprüngli — A Zurich institution that offers a variety of sweet and savory goodies including a wide variety of chocolates, from handmade truffles to special chocolate bars. There are locations throughout the city, including Bahnhofstrasse and inside Zurich HB. Some specialities include the Luxemburgerli, a sort of soft macaroon resembling a hamburger in looks but is actually completely pastry and cream, and comes in a variety of flavors; the Truffe du Jour, a chocolate truffle that is made daily from raw cream and is meant to be consumed immediately; and the extraordinary Grand Cru Sauvage truffle, made from wild cacao beans from Bolivia. Most items are rather pricey but worth it. The flagship store on the Paradeplatz is a very popular spot for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Try their berry-filled muesli, it's like no other muesli you've ever had. There are two handy stores at the Kloten airport for last-minute gifts to bring home.
- 7 St. Jakobs Confiserie. Badenerstrasse 41. The background organisation, Behindertenwerk St. Jacob, aims at providing jobs for disabled people.
Swiss handcrafts
- 8 Schweizer Heimatwerk, Uraniastr 1 (on the river Limmat), ☏ 41 44 222 19 55. M-F 09:00-20:00, Sa 09:00-18:00. Also branches at the Bahnhofstrasse 2 and the airport. Quality Swiss handicrafts and other Swiss-made products presented in a gallery-like setting. You won't find many cuckoo clocks and the like here (cuckoo clocks are not really Swiss, they are from the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) in Germany!), the emphasis is on real traditional crafts and the work of modern craftspeople. You will find things like sleek modern hand-blown glassware and beautiful hand-carved wooden items from the Appenzell region. A worthwhile visit even if you just browse.
Swiss army knives
- Coop City in Bahnhofstrasse sells the Victorinox line at uninflated prices, although you won't get additional bells and whistles like customized faceplates or engraving. Many other department stores also carry them.
- Any cutlery shop will probably carry both Victorinox and Wenger lines of products. However, do make sure they are not inflating the price. For example, a SwissChamp (possibly the most popular model) should be retailed around Fr. 78.
Markte
- 9 Flohmarkt Bürkliplatz (Fleamarket), Bürkliplatz (in the Bellevue area near the Stadelhofen station). May-Oct: Sa 06:00–15:30. Fairly relaxed yet large flea market with many interesting stalls.
- 10 Flohmarkt Kanzlei (Fleamarket), Helvetiaplatz. Sa 08:00–16:00. A big flea market that hosts up to 400 stalls on busy days.
Ander
- There is an English language bookstore at the intersection of Bahnhofstrasse and Rennweg.
- 11 Sihlcity (Tram S4 to "Zürich Saalsporthalle-Sihlcity"), ☏ 41 44 204 99 99, ✉[email protected]. M-Sa 09:00-20:00; Su off. A good old fashioned shopping mall, which is a 5-minute S-Bahn ride away from the main station. It comprises some 100,000 m² of rental space with a range of facilities, such as restaurants, a shopping center, a multiplex cinema, entertainment, health and fitness/wellness area, nightclub, a Four Points hotel and a chapel.
Eet
The quintessential Zürich dish is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (Swiss-German: Zürigschnätzlets), sliced veal in a cream and wine sauce. Various kinds of grilled wurst (sausages) are also popular. These are most often accompanied by boiled potatoes, rösti, a Swiss potato pancake (grated potato, formed into a pancake then pan fried until crisp in butter or oil similar to hash browns) or chnöpfli, in German sometimes called Spätzle (small noodle dumplings).
Veal is still very popular, though the use of turkey and other meats as a substitute is growing.
Terwyl fondue (melted cheese in a central pot, dip bread into it) and Raclette (cheese melted in small portions, served with potatoes and pickles) are not really local to Zürich (they come from the Western Switzerland) they are commonly available at restaurants aimed at tourists. Swiss people usually eat those dishes at home and only during winter.
Die bread available in Zürich is generally delicious. There are many varieties, and your best bet is to go to a bakery or a supermarket in the morning or just after work hours, when most people are doing their shopping and bread is coming out fresh.
Try grilled bratwurst from street stands, served with a large crusty roll of sourdough bread and mustard, or sandwiches made with fresh baked bretzeln (large, soft pretzels). A typically Swiss bread is the zopf, a braided soft bread that is commonly served on Sundays (the other name for it is Sonntagszopf).
For breakfast, try a bowl of müesli, which was invented as a health food in Switzerland. The Sprüngli confectionery store tea rooms serve a deluxe version of this fiber-filled cereal with whole milk, crushed berries and cream.
There are a huge variety of cheeses available at the supermarkets, specialty stores and markets, as well as all kinds of hams en dried sausages. Dairy products are generally delicious, especially the butter. Do not miss the supermarkets! You should take a thorough look through Migros or Coop and maybe even assemble your own lunch or dinner some time. Even the cheap, budget prepackaged desserts in the supermarket exceed the quality of what you may be used to.
For those with a sweet tooth, there's a huge variety of chocolates to enjoy, from the cheapest chocolate bar to individually handmade truffles. (See the Shopping section above). The chocolate bar displays at the supermarkets will overwhelm you! Also enjoy pastries en cakes from the various Konditorei scattered around town. In pastry shops, you can also find special pastry from Zurich: The most famous of them probably is Tirggel, a rather hard pastry made of flour and honey. Although traditionally made and eaten during the Winter holidays, many pastry shops (including larger supermarkets) sell them throughout the year. Often, they've got sights of Zurich printed on the top, can be stored for months and thus make up a pretty good and cheap souvenir. Another famous type of pastry are Luxemburgerli exclusively sold by the confectionery chain of Sprüngli (part of the famous chocolatier Lindt & Sprüngli). A typical cake is the Mandelfisch, an almond cake shaped like a fish.
Like most European cities, Zürich abounds with cafés where you can enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee, glass of wine or other beverage, and watch the world go by.
There are many international dining options available too. The current hot trend seems to be pan-Asian noodle, rice, and sushi places. However, due to the far distance to the sea and the lack of original, well-trained Chinese and Japanese cooks, the quality cannot live up to that of the original countries. Instead, the Italian cuisine holds the highest popularity among the foreign restaurants. They can be found throughout the city and are relatively cheap. Turkish fast food restaurants are also a delicious, cheap option.
Vegetarian food is easy to find throughout the city. Vegans may have a little trouble because cheese is used generously in most food, but should be fine living off supermarkets at the very least. Hiltl, the first vegetarian-only restaurant in Europe, is also worth a visit. You choose from the buffet, where your meal is priced by weight or from a variety of à la carte menus, which are a bit more pricey, but include vegetarian/vegan versions of popular Swiss meals like Züri-Gschnätzlets or Beef Stroganoff amongst Indian food and classic vegetarian plates. It is located in the Red Light District (Langstrasse) of Zurich and is not the ideal place to bring children or acquaintances. Gambrinus looks like a pub more than anything else, but the staff are friendly and speak English. Try the Zürigschnätzlets mit Rösti or the fondue (one of the best in town). From Fr. 14.

In this huge and boisterous restaurant you get good value food and rich portions (only try the Jumbo Jumbo Cordon-Bleu when really hungry). Cheap beer. Service can range from very good to poor depending who is working that day.

Offers great pizzas, large hamburgers, spicy kebabs and other Italian and Turkish dishes at reasonable prices. Staff is very friendly and service is great. Perfect for lunch or a late-night snack.
- 8 Sternen Grill, Theaterstrasse 22. Zurich's most famous sausage stand near Bellevue tram stop. Red or white sausages for around Fr. 6, a piece of bread and (hot!) mustard is included.
- 9 1001. A nice Turkish place with remarkably good kebab, friendly service, and possibility to seat conveniently inside.

Food courts
- Die Migros en Coop supermarkets (several branches all over the city) are good places to assemble an inexpensive and delicious picnic lunch consisting of freshly baked bread, cheese or ham and fresh fruit. Migros Gourmessa is the 'gourmet' takeaway counter, available in larger Migros stores including the Migros City branch at Löwenstrasse. The Coop Bahnhofbrücke branch near the main station also has a small fast-food restaurant. The Migros branch in the main station is open on Sundays when most other stores are closed, and also until 21:00 on weekdays, whereas the Coop Bahnhofbrücke is open M-Sa 07:00 to 22:00.

- 18 Zum Kropf, In Gassen 16 (just down the street from the Zeughauskeller), ☏ 41 44 221 18 05. Offers beer hall fare such as sausages and pork shanks in a somewhat refined setting. The restaurant features a beautiful painted ceiling.
- 19 Globus Bellevue, Theaterstrasse 12. This relatively new branch of the Globus department store in the Bellevue near the Stadelhofen station is totally dedicated to food. There is a large eatery on the ground floor that serves various fusion-type foods (decent noodle bowl) and a passable sushi bar. The ground floor has a gourmet food market, and upstairs there are kitchen wares.
- 20 Sprüngli Paradeplatz, Bahnhofstrasse 21 (1. Floor). The flagship store of the Sprüngli confectionery store chain has a beautiful turn-of-the-century style dining room upstairs that is extremely popular for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Choose from the menu or from the gorgeous display case filled with beautiful cakes, tarts, open-face and regular sandwiches. Try the muesli! Great people watching too, since this is the place for an after-shopping snack for the rich ladies of Zurich.

The restaurants at the top of the Uetliberg are great to combine a nice view of town (a hike in the summer) and some great food. It also has a cheaper self-service area.
Drink
Zurich has a lot of places to go out. There are a lot of clubs, restaurants, cafés, bars but also many museums and theatres. The most common drinks in Zurich include: Beer, Swiss white wine (e.g. Fendant), Swiss red wine (is delicious), and Spanish red wine (is generally good value here). By apéro time (after work), you will find many people drinking a Cüpli (glass of sparkling wine).

- 19 Kanonaegass Bar, Kanonengasse 9. Nice bar off Langstrasse with good drinks and good music. Bar is owned by 1990s electronic-music/trip-hop pioneer Richard Dorfmeister from Kruder & Dorfmeister.

Clubs
Zurich has proportionally more clubs than any other city in Europe. You will find anything from very "fancy" clubs to places you can just chill. If you want, you can go to a club every night. There is always a Club that has a party going and Zurich's young make sure to splash all their income on going out.Most of the clubs are located around the Langstrasse and Hardbrücke. The uncommercial platform denkmal.org aggregates published events from all clubs and bars in Zurich and is a good place to look up what's up. Unsere Beweggründe is mostly focused on the club scene. Usgang.ch used to be pretty big but features mostly big commercial parties.

- 31 Zukunft (Zukki), Dienerstrasse 33. longstanding house and techno club that books djs and live acts from all over the world while trying to keep its underground vibe. Mostly techno and house music. Door policy can be pretty unpredictable.
- 32 Gonzo, Langstrasse 135. A basement club that generally plays no electronic music. Can be lots of fun but the queues are long and the door can be strict. Great on Wednesday (Hip-Hop) and Thursdays (students).
- 33 Klaus, Langstrasse 112. Member only club that is mostly frequented by the local "scene". Features mostly local DJs but is the new place to be. Befriend a local to get in.

- 40 Barfüsser, Spitalgasse 14, ☏ 41 44 251 40 64. Once Europe's oldest gay bar, it has now been converted into a fancy and large lounge and sushi place. Has a relaxed atmosphere and mixed crowd.
- 41 Heldenbar, Sihlquai 240. Heldenbar is the weekly get together of the local LGBTQI scene.

Zurich is the financial centre of Switzerland and most travellers come with an expense account. The hospitality sector focuses therefore mostly on the 4- and 5-star sector. Zurich is known for its superb hotels, but these won't come cheap. Best is to go on a company rate, because rack rates are sometimes ridiculous.

- Couchsurfing. Has a lot of members in Zurich. Public transport is very fast and good, so also consider staying in surrounding areas instead of in the city centre. Remember that couchsurfing is about the community and not only a free place to crash.

A little way out of the centre, but the city is easily reached by public transport (take the S-Bahn to Wollishofen and walk over the hill). A clean and sleek facility, if a little quiet. - 3 Hotel Marta, Zähringerstrasse 36, ☏ 41 44 251 45 50, faks: 41 44 251 45 40, ✉[email protected]. A "clean and friendly" place which doubles as a hostel and a one-star hotel. They also have weekly and monthly rates for rooms, and a couple of studio apartments.
- 4 Otter, Oberdorfstrasse 7, ☏ 41 44 251 22 07, faks: 41 44 251 22 75. A good hotel for the price. The rooms have been decorated with the kind of care that one normally expects in a much more expensive hotel, each with its own theme. You can choose from the jungle room with its hammock, or the pink Carmen, or go for the top floor apartment. Each floor's three rooms share a bath, shower and toilet (WC), with the exception of the apartment which has its own shower. Vr. 115 for a single room, Fr. 150 for a double, and Fr. 200 for 2-person apartment (Fr. 240 for 4-person apartment).
- 5 Hotel Splendid, Rosengasse 5. This hotel is relatively cheap. The rooms are clean but spare. Private showers and bathrooms are not available, you share with your floor. What is really great is the location, right close to the Gemüsebrücke and the city centre. Vr. 62-85 for a single, from Fr. 160 for a 4-person room, plus Fr. 2.50 City-Taxe per person.
- 6 Etap Hotel, Technoparkstrasse 2 (Zurich West), ☏ 41 43 276 20 00, faks: 41 44 276 20 01. This hotel is in a great place if you want to party, next to some great bars and restaurants. The rooms are clean and comfortable. It's also near a tram station, which takes 10 minutes to get to the main train station. 90 Fr (low season) to Fr. 115 (high season) for a single room, and from Fr. 100 for double/triple occupancy. For Zurich, this is cheap.

Situated in the old town near the station and by the charming Niederdorfstrasse, where there are tons of bars and restaurants. The shower has a timer. Be sure to get all the coins for the shower you need by Saturday, as the reception desk closes on Sundays. Vr. 102 for a double room.

Kampeer

Bly veilig
Soos alle stede in Switserland, is Zürich relatief veilig. Wees nietemin op die uitkyk vir diewe en sakkies. Dra u beursie of beursie op 'n veilige manier, nie in u heupsak of 'n rugsak se rugsak nie. Dit is veral bekend dat diewe rondom die hoofstasie in Zürich opereer. Moenie u tasse vir 'n oomblik buite sig laat kom nie.
Sekere gebiede langs die meer word gereeld besoek deur jong mense wat soms probeer baklei as hulle dronk is. Moenie toelaat dat hulle u uitlok nie, omdat hulle waarskynlik in getalle daar sal wees en enige verskoning sal gebruik om na u te gaan. U kan ook opmerk dat baie van die genoemde jongmense iets rook wat nie 'n sigaret is nie. Switserland is verbasend toegewyd oor sulke dinge, maar dit is beswaarlik kommerwekkend.
Openbare vervoer is baie veilig. U kan dit gebruik sonder enige spesiale voorsorgmaatreëls.
As u besluit om in die stad te fiets, moet u verstaan dat Zürich 'n stad is vir openbare vervoer. Pasop vir tremspore wat u wiel kan laat vassteek en u in die verkeer laat vlieg, vir die trems wat gereeld op hierdie spore ry (en u kan bang maak om vas te loop), en die busse wat gereeld regs stop baan. Kortom, fietsry in die middestad moet slegs gedoen word deur diegene wat met sulke verkeer fietsry.
Gay en lesbiese reisigers
Omdat dit die mees liberale stad van Switserland is (die sosialistiese en groen partye vaar nou baie goed hier), is Zurich die gunsteling plek om vir Switserland (Duitssprekende) gays en lesbiërs te woon. Die kanton Zürich was die tweede kanton, na Genève, wat byvoorbeeld geregistreerde vennootskappe vir vennote van dieselfde geslag toegelaat het. Die stad Zürich is waarskynlik die plek in Switserland wat die oopste omgewing vir gays en lesbiërs bied. Gays en lesbiërs hoef nie spesiale voorsorg te tref vir hul veiligheid op straat nie. Dit is egter altyd moontlik dat ewekansige homofobiese gedrag kan plaasvind.
Verbind
Die groter treinstasies in die stad (die hoofstasie en Stadelhofen ingesluit) bied een uur gratis draadlose internet per stasie per 3 uur aan. U moet 'n sms vir 'n eenmalige registrasie kan ontvang.
- 1 Urania Internet Cafe, Uraniastrasse 3 (Naby Bahnhofstrasse en bokant 'n parkeerterrein.). Rekenaars, drukkers en 'n verskeidenheid versnaperings.
Hanteer
Permanensie Hauptbahnhof by die hoofstasie bied dringende buitepasiëntesorg aan toeriste sonder vooraf afsprake. Daar is ook 'n tandarts onder op die stasie. Vir ernstige noodgevalle jaag u na "Kantonsspital", die universiteitskliniek met 'n 24/7 noodafdeling. Tram stop "Universitätsspital" (kyk uit vir die onverklaarbare goue seuntjie standbeeld voor die gebou, volg dan die rooi "Notfall" bordjies). Hulle sal nie mense met ernstige, dringende gesondheidsprobleme wegstuur nie. Ambulans se telefoonnommer is 144, maar die Europese 112-noodnommer werk ook.
As u 'n begroting het, moet u nie te laat uitbly nie. Die "N" -nagbusse ry slegs oor naweke. As hulle hardloop, hardloop hulle net een keer per uur en u moet 'n Nachtzuschlag koop vir Fr. 5 vanaf die masjien en bekragtig dit voordat u instap. Op werksaande is daar omstreeks 00:30 glad nie 'n openbare vervoer nie (hoewel daar nog steeds duur huurmotors is as u vassit).
Winkels is gewoonlik op Sondae gesluit, insluitend alle supermarkte in die stad, behalwe in die hoofstasie-, Enge- en Stadelhofen-stasies, en op die lughawe wat oop bly.
Vermy om op 1 Mei Zürich te bereik of te besoek. Die stad is op 'n Arbeidsdag / Mei-dag vakansie. Die trems ry die helfte van die dag nie, dus dit kan 'n probleem wees om rond te kom. Daar kan ook geringe gewelddadige uitbrake en skade aan motors wees.
Zurich het twee polisiedepartemente, die Stadtpolizei Zurich wat verantwoordelik is vir die stadsgebied en die Kantonspolizei Zürich wat verantwoordelik is vir die hele streek. Met ongeveer 1 800 en 3 000 offisiere is hierdie korps die grootste in Switserland. Terwyl polisiebeamptes in Zürich u graag sal help as u in die moeilikheid is of aanwysings benodig, is hulle ook bekend daarvoor dat hulle "verdagte" persone nader om hul papiere te kontroleer. 'N Paar interessante bestemmings in die omgewing:
- Baden - Hierdie stad is bekend vir sy kasteelruïne en die termiese baddens. Dit neem 15 minute per trein om vanaf Zürich daarheen te kom.
- Greifensee - 'n Meer en dorp langs die nabygeleë stad Uster. Die dorpie Greifensee is binne 'n bewaringsgebied en baie onaangeraak.
- Lusern - Waarskynlik Switserland se gewildste bestemming. Gaan daarheen om die beroemde kapelbrug of die indrukwekkende vervoermuseum te sien.
- Rapperswil - Geleë aan die oorkant van die Zürichmeer. 'N Klein, skilderagtige dorpie, goed om te kuier. Dit is moontlik om met die boot van Zürich af daarheen te gaan.
- Die Ryn val - Europa se grootste waterval. Dit is naby geleë Schaffhausen, wat 'n mooi ou stad in die Renaissance-styl het.
- Winterthur - Ongeveer 25 minute van Zürich af, is hierdie stad op 'n reënerige dag die moeite werd om van sy vele museums te besoek. Technorama is die gewildste een, 'n interaktiewe wetenskapsentrum.
'N Entjie verder weg, maar ook 'n daguitstappie werd:
- Appenzell - So na aan die stereotipiese beeld van Switzerlands met houtplaashuise en tradisionele klere as wat dit word. 'N Interessante besoek is die kaasfabriek, waar die Appenzell-kaas gemaak word.
- Augusta Raurica - Dit is een van die bes bewaarde Romeinse terreine noord van die Alpe, naby Basel.
- Bellinzona - Sedert die opening van die nuwe Gotthard-tonnel in 2016, is die Italiaanssprekende deel van Switserland minder as twee uur met die trein. Gaan na Bellinzona om sy drie kastele te sien, wat as 'n UNESCO-wêrelderfenisgebied ingeskryf is.
- Biel - Tradisionele horlosiedorp. Besoek die Omega-fabriek om meer oor die horlosiebedryf te wete te kom.
- Chur - Nie net 'n lekker stad nie, maar ook 'n goeie middelpunt vir stap of ski in die bergagtige omgewing Graubünden streek.
- Fribourg - Tuisdorp vir die beroemde Switserse fondue. 'N Goeie keuse as u 'n kort reis na die Franse deel van Switserland wil maak.
